Author J.K. Rowling slammed a new Scottish bill that would change the age when people can legally change their gender from 18 to 16, warning of the “negative consequences of this legislation for women and girls.”
“The most searing, heartfelt and courageous response yet to @ShonaRobison‘s astounding claim in the Scottish parliament that there is no evidence sexual predators ‘have ever had to pretend to be anything else’. Susan, as a fellow survivor, I salute you,” the Harry Potter series author wrote, attaching an article on the bill’s capacity to enable pedophilia.

“The law @NicolaSturgeon‘s trying to pass in Scotland will harm the most vulnerable women in society: those seeking help after male violence/rape and incarcerated women. Statistics show that imprisoned women are already far more likely to have been previously abused,” she wrote in a subsequent tweet.

She later tweeted that the Scottish government can’t pretend it wasn’t warned if it chooses to move forward with the legislation, adding that “multiple women’s groups have presented well-sourced evidence” of the consequences of the proposed bill.

On International Women’s Day on Tuesday, the bestselling author wrote, “Apparently, under a Labour government, today will become We Who Must Not Be Named Day,” referencing Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities and Chair of the Labour Party Anneliese Dodds’s inability to define the word “woman” on a radio program.

When asked for the Labour Party’s definition of a woman, Dodds said it depends on the context.

This comes as several governors in the United States sign bills to protect women’s sports and prohibit biological males from participating in them. Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem have recently signed such bills.
However, not every Republican governor is following suit. Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said last week he would veto such a bill protecting women’s sports.
The Preserving Sports for Female Students bill in Utah would have banned “a student of the male sex from participating in an athletic activity designated for female students,” but Spencer made his feelings clear.

“[Transgender children are] awesome kids, and they’re not out there breaking any records,” Cox said. “I just want that community to know, look, we care about you, we love you, it’s going to be OK. We’re going to get through this together.”
