D.C. Humane Society getting pawlitical

The Washington Humane Society is going all-out for the presidential campaign season, starting with naming its new mobile adoption center after the president’s wings.

The “Adopt Force One” name came after the animal nonprofit asked for suggestions from the community then put it up to a poll on its Facebook page.

“As the only congressionally chartered animal welfare organization in the country and the open-access shelter in Washington, we agree that the name, a play off Air Force One, is incredibly fun and fitting for D.C.’s animals,” said Julie Conway, chief development officer, in a Washington Humane Society news release.

Adopt Force One will be part of an “Elect to Adopt DC — All Pawlitics is Local” campaign to encourage more local WHS adoptions.

The vehicle was acquired in May thanks to a $150,000 grant from the Stanton Foundation, a New York-based foundation created by Frank Stanton, a media pioneer and lifelong dog owner. The van will bring animals into area communities for adoption, starting with FedEx Field’s parking lot during the Redskins’ first pre-season home game against the Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 25. Adopt Force One plans to be at all Redskins’ home games this season, according to the news release.
