An FBI forensics expert testified Wednesday that DNA from former Rep. Gary Condit (D-Calif.) was found on underwear that belonged to federal intern Chandra Levy.
Condit, with whom Levy was romantically linked, was once considered a key suspect in the case. But another man —Ingmar Guandique, a 29-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador — is now on trial in D.C. Superior Court for her death.
The semen on the panties from Levy’s apartment was tested in May 2001, Alan Giusti of the FBI’s nuclear DNA laboratory testified. But no DNA was recovered from underwear or tights found the crime scene at Rock Creek Park, where Levy’s body was found in May 2002, Giusti testified.
When Condit testified earlier in the trial, he refused to admit that he had had an affair with Levy.
Giusti also testified about law-enforcement errors in the case. He said the FBI had to re-test some DNA samples tested in 2001 because the bureau discovered that an analyst had not followed proper procedures.
