Students from Dr. Rayner Browne Elementary, Cross Country Elementary/Middle and Hampstead Hill Elementary Middle won Maryland State Chess Championship titles Saturday at Towson University, the Baltimore City Public School System announced.
Nine Baltimore City elementary and kindergarten through grade eight schools competed in grade-level matches against more than 60 public and private school teams from across the state in varsity and junior varsity divisions. Teams of four players each represented Hilton Elementary, General Wolfe Elementary, Dr. Rayner Browne Elementary, Federal Hill Preparatory, Hampstead Hill Academy, Alexander Hamilton Elementary, Woodhome Elementary/Middle, Pimlico Elementary/Middle and Cross Country Elementary.
Baltimore City schools swept championships at the primary level and captured trophies in all five divisions that were entered.
