DC Sail wins award for helping disadvantaged youth

DC Sail, a community sailing program aimed at engaging disadvantaged youth, has won the Outstanding New Program Award from U.S. Sailing.

The award requires that an organization or program show exemplary efforts in making sailing accessible within its first year of existence. DC Sail’s Schooner Sailing program incorporates a 65-foot schooner called American Spirit, with which children learn maritime skills and local history.

DC Sail is a nonprofit sailing organization that offers programs to children as young as 4 as well as adults. All profits go toward Kids Set Sail, a program that emphasizes teamwork, self-respect and sportsmanship. – Roxanne Turnbull
