A shooting at a Walmart Supercenter in Chesapeake, Virginia, has resulted in “multiple fatalities,” police confirmed to ABC 13.
A little after 10 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a shooting at a Walmart Supercenter on Sam’s Circle, Chesapeake Police Department spokesman Leo Kosinski said.

Police responded as though it were an active shooter situation, but Kosinski said he believed the shooting had stopped by the time police arrived.
Over the next 30 to 45 minutes, police found multiple fatalities and several injured parties.
The exact number of dead and wounded victims was not released, and no motive is known at this time.
In a text message to the Associated Press, Mike Kafka, a spokesman for Sentara Healthcare, said five patients from the Walmart were being treated at Norfolk General Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.
Due to the size of the store, police were still clearing the scene two hours after the incident, Kosinski said, noting that information on the total number of fatalities and injuries was expected to be released but that he “did not expect a lot more to come out in the overnight hours.”
The shooting suspect is deceased, Kosinski said.
“We believe it was a single shooter, and we believe that shooter is deceased at this time,” Kosinski said.
Walmart released a statement on Twitter following the shooting.

“I am devastated by the senseless act of violence that took place last night in our City. My prayers are with all those affected – the victims, their family, their friends, and their coworkers. I am grateful for the quick actions taken by our first responders who rushed to the scene,” West said in a statement. “Please keep us in your prayers.”
“It’s sad,” Kosinski said. “We’re a couple of days before the Thanksgiving holiday, and it’s a bad time all around for everyone involved, especially the victims. This is horrible.”
