Highway workers killed in median identified

Police said two men from Silver Spring were the highway workers killed by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel in Charles County.

Marlon E. C. Lorenzo, 28, and Erick T. M. Alvarado, 24, died Thursday afternoon when a Hyattsville man driving westbound on state Route 228 near Waldorf veered off the roadway and into the median. He struck a highway sign and the two State Highway Administration contract workers, Maryland State Police said.

Police said Lorenzo and Alvarado had mowed the grass in the median and were picking up trash when they were struck. A third contract worker in the media was not hit.

The driver, Yuri Vielot Jr., has not been charged, but police said charges are pending and will be determined by the Charles County State’s Attorney’s Office.
