Union endorses White for D.C. school board

The Washington Teachers’ Union has endorsed a Ballou Senior High School and University of Maryland graduate to fill the Ward 8 seat of the D.C. school board.

Trayon White currently serves as the executive direcor of Helping Inner City Kids Succeed Inc., a Ward 8 initiative. The union heralded his “energy, civic involvement, and dedication to empowering students.”

“Mr. White’s sincerity and ‘old spirit’ outpaced his numerous well-known opponents,” WTU President Nathan Saunders said. “He is the personification of the D.C. public school student that every teacher want to succeed.”

Tijwanna Phillips, Philip Pannell and Eugene Dewitt Kinlow are also running for the seat, which hinges on the April 26 special election vote.

The seat was vacated after William Lockridge, 63, died of a stroke in January at George Washington University Hospital. The union announced two $1,000 scholarships in his honor.

“He had the best intentions for teachers and residents of the District of Columbia,” Saunders said. “His sincerity, dedication and commitment were inspiring.”
