Singer Beyonce has helped raise more than $82,000 for the victims of Flint’s water crisis.
Beyonce’s Parkwood Entertainment presented the United Way of Genesee County with a check for $82,234 on Monday, Beyonce’s reps announced Monday.
The singer had promised to aid Flint during February’s Super Bowl. She is set to perform at Ford Field Tuesday, marking the final concert in her tour’s first U.S. leg.
The funds were raised by her fans, who were given the option of contributing when they bought tickets to her shows.
Detroit is one of three cities on her 23-date Formation World Tour to feature a “signature charity event,” which also included her hometown of Houston and Los Angeles.
Beyonce’s team had previously announced her Ford Field concert would include an event that will “serve as a celebration of the resourcefulness of the people of Flint and Detroit, Mich.”
Royal Oak-based fundraising website CrowdRise, Chime for Change and Global Citizen were all part of the Flint initiative. The latter two will both have a presence at Tuesday’s concert.
Fourteen Detroit-area high school students were chosen to receive “college gifts” to help with their educational expenses, the Detroit News reported. The students were also given tickets to Tuesday’s concert, Beyonce’s team announced.
The city of Flint still continues to deal with its tainted water supply, which has been under the national spotlight for months.
