The Senate Armed Services Committee confirmed national security adviser Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster’s reappointment to his rank in a closed-door executive meeting.
McMaster was reappointed to his rank by a 23-2 vote with two abstentions, according to a committee release.
The active-duty officer does not require confirmation by the Senate to serve as President Trump’s national security adviser, but does need a vote from the Senate to keep his three-star rank.
The nomination still requires a vote in the full Senate, though McMaster could stay in the role as a two-star or a civilian even if the vote fails.
