Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Nebraska, sassed a journalist Thursday night who had argued President Obama should unilaterally end all American guns sales.
“You should learn about America – glorious country. We haven’t believed in absolute monarchy for quite some time here,” Sasse tweeted Thursday night in response to Vox editor Dylan Matthews.

Matthews had tweeted earlier in the day that though it is not the Democrats’ “sales pitch” he personally would be “totally down with letting the prez unilaterally ban people (hopefully everyone!) from buying guns.”
Matthews has lived and written in America for some time. According to his Wikipedia bio, he launched the Minipundit blog in 2004 “at the age of 14.”
Sasse likely knew this and had a bigger target of mockery in mind than Matthews’ tweet. Last year leading up to Independence Day, Matthews published the piece “3 reasons the American Revolution was a mistake.”
He argued the American Revolution was a bad idea because independence was bad for African and Native Americans here and also because “America would have a better system of government if we’d stuck with Britain.”
So Sasse’s dig at Matthews over the monarchy was likely his way of saying, “Nice try, kid.”
