Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney surpassed her own fundraising record by raising $2.05 million in the final quarter of 2021 as she faces a primary challenge by a Trump-backed Republican candidate.
Cheney, a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, had raised $1.5 million, $1.9 million, and $1.7 million in each of the other quarters, respectively, bringing her total fundraising for the year to $7 million as she seeks reelection. Cheney ended the year with $4.72 million cash in hand, according to information shared with the Casper Star-Tribune.
Harriet Hageman, the GOP rival who was endorsed by Trump, has raised $1 million since the start of her campaign in September, with approximately $745,000 raised in the final two quarters of 2021. Hageman raised $443,460 in the final quarter, approximately a quarter of Cheney’s haul. Hageman ended the year with $381,163 cash in hand, according to a press release shared with the Washington Examiner on Monday. Since the end of the year, Hageman has raised an additional $200,000, bringing her over the $1 million mark.
“Wyoming deserves to be represented by someone who cares about Wyoming, not someone who is consumed by her own personal war with President Trump,” Hageman said in the press release. “I have been to all 23 counties in Wyoming, and I know that the people are desperate for a change.”
GOP PRIMARY CHALLENGER AGAINST LIZ CHENEY RAISES OVER $1 MILLION
Cheney, who has served in the House for three terms, was one of 10 Republican House members to vote for impeaching Trump in 2021 following the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, 2021. Cheney is one of two Republicans on the House committee investigating the Capitol riot.
Cheney’s criticism of Trump has elicited blowback from members of her own party loyal to the former president. In May, she was removed from party leadership, and in November, she was no longer recognized by the Wyoming GOP. Other Republicans, including former President George W. Bush and Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, have voiced support for Cheney. She has also received donations from major Democratic donors hoping to avoid a Trump-endorsed member of Congress.

Hageman and Cheney are not the only candidates fighting to represent Wyoming in the state’s sole House seat. State Sen. Anthony Bouchard and retired Army Col. Denton Knapp are also running in the primary. However, neither campaign has released fundraising numbers.
