Flooding, faulty pumps shut down Blue/Yellow lines

Overnight rains plus broken-down pumps caused major delays on Metro in Northern Virginia during the Monday morning commute when flooding shut down a section of the Yellow and Blue lines. Making matters worse, train service on Virginia Railway Express was also bogged down on the Fredericksburg line. The problem for Metro was that pumps inside a small section of tunnel between the National Airport and Braddock Road stations failed to turn on to remove standing water, said Metro spokesman Dan Stessel. When service started in the morning, water was above the rails. Stessel said the transit agency shuttled 6,702 riders between the two stations, and full rail service was restored by 9:30 a.m. – Kytja Weir
