Volunteers to rebuild two Montgomery County homes

Two single moms are getting their homes remodeled for free as part of the second annual “Room to Rebuild” project, sponsored by Choice Hotels.

The first house belongs to a 66-year-old woman who works part time and takes care of her son with special needs. Choice Hotel volunteers will replace her furnace, air conditioning, water heater and washer/dryer, and landscape her yard. They also will rewire her electric connection, which has become a fire hazard.

The second house belongs to a young woman with a 9-year-old child and a baby due in November. She is struggling to make mortgage payments and other expenses and was recently cited for fire code regulations, according to the news release.

Volunteers will dismantle a garage that has collapsed, rebuild walls, replace windows, build a driveway and landscape her yard. Her basement also will be analyzed by a structural engineer and reconstructed.

Both homes are in the Glenmont neighborhood of Silver Spring.
