Gov. Martin O?Malley heads to Ireland again on Wednesday night, on a trip paid for by the Dublin Chamber of Commerce.
This is O?Malley?s second trip to his ancestral homeland since he became governor in January. The magazine Irish America featured the governor on its cover earlier this year.
The governor’s travel plans were made public on Monday, the same day he called for an Oct. 29 special session of the General Assembly to deal with the state’s looming budget crisis.
According to O?Malley spokesman Rick Abbruzzese, the governor will speak to the annual dinner of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, one of the major business events of the year.
On Friday, he will attend a luncheon in which the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland will honor Dr. Robert Gallo, the world-famous AIDS researcher who heads the Institute of Human Virology in Baltimore. There is also a dinner honoring Gallo.
“The governor thought it was important for him to honor Dr. Gallo,” Abbruzzese said.
The governor has meetings scheduled with the Irish minister of the environment, and he will also tour Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research with Gallo.
