TicketNetwork defamation lawsuit headed to trial

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — An online ticket sales company is headed to trial in its defamation lawsuit against a Hartford theater and its president, three months after the firm settled deceptive business practice allegations by government regulators for $750,000.

TicketNetwork Inc. is suing The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts and its president and chief executive, David Fay. The South Windsor company says Fay disparaged its business practices. The trial is set to begin Wednesday in Hartford.

In court documents, Fay says his comments were true. He told a legislative committee that TicketNetwork gobbled up tickets on The Bushnell’s website, then resold them at greatly inflated prices. TicketNetwork says it served only as a marketplace.

The Federal Trade Commission said TicketNetwork and other companies “misled consumers into thinking they were buying event tickets from the original venue at face value.”
