South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is polling at 0% among African Americans, according to a new CNN poll.
The poll, released Monday, showed a drop in support for the 37-year-old mayor to 4% after many scrutinized his response to a shooting in South Bend last month.
Buttigieg’s support among white Democrats was at 6% in the new poll, and he polled in fifth place overall behind Joe Biden, Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and Sen. Bernie Sanders.
The poll showed front-runner Joe Biden’s support dropping 10% from last month to 22%. His support among African Americans remained strong at 36% despite Sen. Kamala Harris attacking him during the first debate for his opposition to busing in the 1970s.
Buttigieg’s struggle in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary comes as activists and former city officials demand his resignation as mayor over his handling of the death of an African American man by a South Bend police officer.
Critics say the young mayor cares more about his political ambitions than the city’s residents.
