Former NYPD commissioner blasts sports leagues for silence on black officer killed from gunshot to the head

Former New York City Police Department Commissioner Bernard Kerik slammed professional sports leagues for remaining silent on the death of a black police officer in St. Louis, Missouri.

“So a white guy shoots and kills a black cop — father of three — and there isn’t a word from #BlackLivesMatter, the @NBA, @NFL, @NHL, and @MLB. But if a cop kills a black career criminal or sex offender, they want to burn the city down. Think about that for a minute!” Kerik tweeted.

“Perhaps #BLM Should be changed to #TLM. #ThugLivesMatter. Has any of these shit talking millionaire sports figures contributed to the family of St. Louis Police Officer Tamarris Bohannon? Just curious,” he continued.

Tamarris Bohannon, 29, was shot in the head on Saturday while responding to a shooting in St. Louis. He died from his injury on Sunday.

Police have arrested Thomas Kinworthy, who is white, and charged him with first-degree murder, three counts of armed criminal action, assault, burglary, resisting arrest, and unlawful use of a firearm on Tuesday.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the NFL, NHL, MLB, and NBA this week to ask if the leagues would honor Bohannon or slain retired police Capt. David Dorn. None of the leagues have responded.

Sports leagues and team players have been vocal in their support of the Black Lives Matter movement in recent months, following the Memorial Day death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

This week, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said fields will feature social justice messages on end zones during all games this season.

“The NFL stands with the black community, the players, clubs, and fans,” Goodell said Tuesday. “We will not relent in our work.”
