A 13-year-old middle school student from Annandale is facing extortion charges after he reportedly told another student that the student’s father would be killed if he didn’t comply with the suspect’s demands for cash.
The suspect is accused of telling the victim that he would receive “protection,” if he joined the suspect’s gang, according to Fairfax County police. The suspect said it cost $500 to join and the victim’s father would be killed if the cash wasn’t provided, police said.
Police determined that the student was acting alone and has no direct ties to an organized gang.
Both the suspect and victim are students at Poe Middle School, police said. Their names have not been released because they are juveniles.
