President Trump inaccurately claimed Tuesday that a photo identification card is required to purchase groceries as support for his argument for stricter voter ID laws.
“You know if you go out and you want to buy groceries, you need a picture on a card,” Trump said during a campaign rally in Florida. “You need ID.”

Trump made his comments while speaking at a campaign rally in Tampa, Fla., where he was supporting Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., in his gubernatorial bid.
The president made the false statement as he was listing examples of when Americans need to show identification, compared to what he claims are lax voter ID laws in the U.S.
However, those who advocate for voters’ rights say that proposed voter ID laws are intended to suppress voter turnout among minorities.
