Virginians, grab your BB guns and a bottle of your finest chardonnay – starting Friday, the commonwealth is loosening up a bit.
Two of hundreds of new laws set to go into effect July 1 will allow a little more freedom for wine lovers and gun toters.
Wine lovers will be allowed to bring their own bottle of wine to cooperating restaurants. (Word to the wise: Sommeliers may give you the stink-eye if you bring Three-buck Chuck to their fine establishments. This reporter, on the other hand, will give you a wink and a thumbs up.) Restaurants aren’t required to participate in the state’s new BYOB law, so interested drinkers should call ahead.
After a night of fine wine, how about a little target practice in your backyard? Another new law allows the use of pneumatic guns – think BB guns, pellet guns and paint guns – just about anywhere in the state, as long as the property owner gives the go-ahead. Whereas past law categorized pneumatic weapons with other firearms that are barred from populated areas, the new law puts them in their own and much less restrictive category.
Good luck, Virginians – could make for an interesting summer.
