‘Awesome display of athleticism’: K-9 breaks through car window to take down suspect (VIDEO)

Police in California captured a suspect after a car chase that ended with officers using rubber pellets to shoot out the windows of the man’s car, allowing a K-9 unit to break through.

Fontana police were dispatched to a call regarding 31-year-old stalking suspect Julio Vasquez around midnight on Friday when they say Vasquez took off in his vehicle, leading them and the California Highway Patrol on an almost hourlong pursuit.

The car was stopped after the highway patrol was able to force the man to a stop by using spike strips and a PIT maneuver, which is when a law enforcement vehicle forces the car it is pursuing to lose control.

Once Vasquez came to a stop, police said that he remained uncooperative. Rubber pellets were fired into the side window of the vehicle Vasquez was driving, breaking the glass. A K-9 named Duke with the Corona Police Department was then deployed. Duke was captured on video leaping at full force through the window, breaking more glass in the process, and biting the suspect.

Corona police Sgt. Chad Fountain told the Washington Examiner that Duke came out of the arrest uninjured.

“It was a pretty awesome display of athleticism by our dog,” Fountain noted.

Vasquez, who was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, was charged with felony stalking and felony evading. He might also face additional charges for allegedly punching the 7-year-old Belgian Malinois during the arrest.
