Democrats pinned their hopes on winning 10 Texas congressional House seats this cycle to prove the red state is finally beginning to turn blue, or at least purple, but they ended up losing all 10 targeted races.
President Trump won Texas with its 38 electoral votes by several percentage points. Additionally, Republicans held the majority of the Texas House, which was key to Democrats’ hopes of having a say in the redistricting process after the 2020 census.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy boasted Thursday about the Texas seats Republicans won and held.
“The Cook Report actually had it as a ‘toss-up.’ [The Democrats] believed they were going to win all these open seats. They believed they were gonna defeat incumbents not only in Texas, but other states,” McCarthy said. “They did not defeat one Republican incumbent who ran for reelection. In Texas, no, they didn’t defeat one incumbent. Just like in every other state on this win, we’re going to have some amazing women. Beth Van Duyne is going to add to the delegation of Texas.”
