Michigan Republican Rep. Justin Amash was so upset about missing a vote on Friday that he was seen being visibly emotional at the Capitol.
The House Freedom Caucus member had not missed a roll call vote since coming to Congress in 2011, making him the reigning vote champion with 4,289 votes. That was until Friday when, according to Politico, Amash was so busy holding court with reporters against the bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act winding its way through the House that he didn’t notice a vote was ending.
At that moment the speaker pro tempore gaveled the vote closed and Amash realized he had missed it, the lawmaker became emotional. He involuntarily passed the scepter to his classmate, Rep. Steve Womack, R-Ark., who celebrated the distinction.
“I have been sent to Washington by third district Arkansans to make sure their voices are heard; voting is fundamental to that duty,” Womack stated in a news release posted on his website shortly after he unexpectedly became the vote king. “I am humbled by the opportunity to serve my constituents and thank God that no personal hardships have kept me from representing them on a single vote since taking office.”
Amash tweeted to his constituents on Friday: “I’m sorry.”
#MI03, I’m sorry.
