An American citizen died in the terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announced Friday.
“Obviously, we express our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of this individual and obviously the others who have suffered loss of life and we offer our thoughts and prayers to their families as they’re going to be dealing with a very, very tough few days ahead of them,” Tillerson said Friday at the State Department.

At least 13 people died and 100 more were injured when a driver rammed his van into La Rambla, a touristy shopping district in Barcelona.
The first victim of that attack has been identified as Bruno Gulotta, an Italian. A Portuguese spokesperson told CNN a 74-year-old national has been identified as a victim of the van attack, and her granddaughter is also missing.
The van’s driver, identified as Moussa Oukabir, 18, escaped on foot. Despite a major anti-terrorism campaign, he has not been found.
Eight hours later in Cambrils south of Barcelona, another car rammed into six people and a police officer, leaving one woman dead from her injuries. Five attackers in fake suicide belts were killed in a shootout with police.
According to authorities, both attacks were related to another explosion Wednesday in a province 100 miles southwest of Barcelona that left one person dead.
Four suspects across the region have been arrested in relation to the attacks.
Police say the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils were part of a larger terrorist plan.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy condemned what he called a “jihadist attack,” and announced three days of national mourning.
