Herrity’s open-heart surgery goes smoothly

Fairfax County Supervisor Pat Herrity is recovering in intensive care after an open heart surgery Thursday morning, and doctors have said the surgery went “as expected.”

Herrity announced several weeks ago that he planned to undergo the operation after he saw a doctor for abnormal heart rhythms in November. The condition itself wasn’t dangerous, but while investigating it, doctors discovered that Herrity had an aortic aneurysm and scheduled the surgery, according to Herrity’s office.

Herrity will spend the next day or two in the intensive care unit at the Fairfax Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, and leave the hospital after four to six days, according to his office. He’ll be in recovery for the next four to six weeks, his office said.
