A large earthquake struck north of Los Angeles as many Californians were enjoying Fourth of July festivities.
The amount of damage caused has yet to be reported, but many Twitter users said the earthquake was the largest they have ever felt. Videos of the quake, 6.6 magnitude by early measurements taken by the U.S. Geological Survey, began circulating online.
The earthquake struck at 10:33 a.m. and was centered in the Searles Valley, about 100 miles from Los Angeles. It was the largest in Southern California since a 6.6 quake struck Northridge in 1994. That one killed dozens of people and cost billions in damage, but Searles Valley is a remote, much less-populated area.
