Trump: NFL should adopt Dallas Cowboys’ policy, stand for national anthem

President Trump said Friday that the National Football League should adopt Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ policy that players need to stand on the field for the national anthem.

“Way to go Jerry. This is what the league should do!” Trump posted to Twitter Friday morning.

In May, NFL owners approved guidelines that said players either had to stand for the national anthem on the field, or they could opt to stay in the locker rooms during the playing of The Star-Spangled Banner. The new rules would also fine teams whose players appeared on the field but did not stand during the anthem.

Jones came out against the new rule, indicating that he would not support players that chose to stay in the locker room.

However, the league put a hold on its ban against on-field national anthem protests, saying in a joint statement with the NFL Players Association that it would be on hold while they worked toward a resolution.

Last week, Trump spoke out against the ban saying, “The NFL National Anthem Debate is alive and well again – can’t believe it!”

In a tweet last Friday, Trump called on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to suspend players for one game after their first offense of protesting during the anthem, and for their second offense, Trump said the player should not be suspended without pay for the rest of the season.
