Arkansas student shot on first day of in-person learning

An Arkansas student was reportedly shot on Monday, the same day the school resumed in-person learning after being shuttered amid water issues and the coronavirus pandemic.

Law enforcement apprehended who they believed to be the gunmen after the incident at Watson Chapel Junior High School. The suspect was described as a black male in a hoodie, and it is unclear whether he “was a student or teacher.” The student, whose identity is yet to be disclosed, is alive but in serious condition.

“There has been a shooting at the Watson Chapel Junior High. All campuses are on lock down,” the Watson County School District wrote in a Facebook post. “The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and the Pine Bluff Police Department are on site to control the situation. We will notify you as more information becomes available.”

School officials said the building was bunkered down and the gunfire was “an isolated incident.” District leaders organized a “supervised release” for students after forbidding parents from picking up their children in a prior statement.

“All students are safe!” the district continued.

A SWAT team reportedly swept and cleared the building after the gunfire erupted.
