Fox News’ Megyn Kelly will not be apologizing to former reality TV star Donald Trump anytime soon, even though Trump has demanded one for how she moderated the Republican debate last Thursday.
“I’ve decided not to respond [to Trump],” she said Monday night. “I certainly will not apologize for doing good journalism, without fear or favor … It’s time now to move forward. And now back to the news.”
Trump claims it was “unprofessional” for Kelly to ask him during the debate to address disparaging remarks that he has made about women.
“You once told a contestant on ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ it would be a pretty picture to see her on her knees,” she said. “Does that sound to you like the temperament of a man we should elect as president, and how will you answer the charge from Hillary Clinton, who is likely to be the Democratic nominee, that you are part of the war on women?”
Trump responded with a monologue about how “political correctness” is killing the country.
Immediately after the debate, Trump complained to reporters that Kelly had been “unfair” to him. But the feud really started after Trump seemed to suggest that Kelly was menstruating during the debate.
“She gets out and she starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions,” Trump said. “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her … wherever.”
Trump denies he meant to imply anything about menstruation. Later, on Monday, Trump demanded an apology from Kelly.
“She should really be apologizing to me, you want to know the truth. And other candidates have said that,” he said during an MSNBC interview.
Trump and Fox News president Roger Ailes appeared later that morning to have brokered some sort of truce.
“Roger Ailes just called. He is a great guy & assures me that ‘Trump’ will be treated fairly on [Fox News],” the 2016 Republican presidential candidate tweeted Monday morning. “His word is always good!”
Still, it doesn’t look like Trump will be getting that apology anytime soon.
