The Kremlin wants to explain itself to French actor Gerard Depardieu after he criticized Russia’s top boss for “crazy, unacceptable excesses” in Ukraine.
Depardieu, who received Russian nationality in 2013, does not fully understand the situation, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who offered on Friday to explain the country’s decision-making to the French actor.
“The Russian people are not responsible for the crazy, unacceptable excesses of their leaders like Vladimir Putin,” Depardieu said Thursday to Agence France-Presse, according to Reuters.

The French actor, who has starred in The Man in the Iron Mask and Green Card, among other films, said he will be donating all the proceeds from three nights of performances in Paris starting Friday to go toward Ukrainian victims of the “tragic fratricidal war,” BBC reported.
Depardieu has a history of being friendly with Putin, receiving his Russian passport from Putin personally and shaking hands and hugging. He also hailed Russia as “a great democracy” at the time.
