Mike Pompeo: Kim Jong Un’s ‘paying attention’ to what the world is saying

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is aware of the international spotlight cast on him and his rogue nation as he prepares for a historic summit with President Trump.

“The conversations are professional. He knows his brief, he knows what he is trying to achieve for the North Korean people. He is able to deal with complexity when the conversation requires it,” Pompeo said during an interview with “Fox News Sunday,” describing his interactions with Kim on the two occasions he’s talked to the North Korean leader face-to-face.

“He does follow the Western press. He’ll probably watch this show at some point. He’s paying attention to things that the world is saying,” Pompeo continued.

Pompeo first met with Kim over Easter weekend. He made a follow-up trip to the North Korea last week to iron out the details of the Trump-Kim summit and also secured the release of three Americans held in captivity by the North Korean regime.

One topic the pair hadn’t broached, Pompeo said Sunday, were the insults exchanged between Trump and Kim, including the president’s past moniker for Kim, “Little Rocket Man.”

“No. We didn’t cover that,” he said.

Trump’s meeting with Kim is set for June 12 in Singapore.
