Trump: Would be a ‘shame’ if countries backed by US opposed 2026 World Cup in North America

President Trump said it would be “a shame” if countries that the U.S. supports were to advocate against having North America host the 2026 World Cup.

“The U.S. has put together a STRONG bid w/ Canada & Mexico for the 2026 World Cup,” Trump tweeted Thursday. “It would be a shame if countries that we always support were to lobby against the U.S. bid. Why should we be supporting these countries when they don’t support us (including at the United Nations)?”

The tweet comes after U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley warned Friday that the U.S. would eliminate foreign aid to countries that fail to back the U.S. at the United Nations, following a State Department review showing that agreement with the U.S. by other nations has dropped over the past year.

The House almost unanimously passed a resolution earlier this week for the U.S., along with Canada and Mexico, to host the 2026 World Cup.

Only three Republicans — Reps. Justin Amash of Michigan, Tom Garrett of Virginia, and Louie Gohmert of Texas — opposed the measure. Four other representatives did not vote.

The U.S. has not hosted a World Cup since 1994.
