Ohio Gov. John Kasich appeared not to side with other Republicans who have called for President Trump to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize as a result of negotiating meetings between North and South Korea.
“It’s a long way between the lip and the cup,” Kasich said when asked about the possibility of Trump being nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Kasich, who is rumored to seek the Oval Office in 2020, then pivoted to the topic of and freedom of the press, calling the media “one of the most important institutions that supports our country.” Kasich was interviewed while heading to the White House Correspondents Association dinner on Saturday.

“We need to find people who are going to be rational, who are going to search for the truth, who are going to be objective,” he said. “The people who are extremes on the poles, they are not the ones that can call the tune. It’s got to be us in the middle, the ocean. So, those terms are old and we need to come together as a country.”
Earlier in the evening, rally attendees in Washington, Mich., where Trump was delivering a speech began to chant, “Nobel! Nobel!” when the president brought up ongoing negotiations over North Korea. Trump was praising Chinese President Xi Jinping for putting pressure on North Korea when the crowd began chanting.
Several Republican lawmakers have called for Trump to be considered for the prize after a historic summit between North and South Korea earlier this week and a planned meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
