Washington Football Team releases quarterback Dwayne Haskins

Only two years into the Dwayne Haskins experiment, the Washington Football Team has seen enough.

In a statement released by head coach Ron Rivera on Monday, the team announced its decision to waive Haskins, a first-round pick quarterback from the Ohio State University who had once been seen as a potential franchise player at the position.

Haskins, 23, struggled to find his footing in Washington. He was drafted in 2019 by the team, led then by former coach Jay Gruden, and thrown headfirst into a win-now situation that never allowed Haskins the development time that scouts said he sorely needed.

Rivera, who was hired by owner Dan Snyder to turn around a string of losing seasons, parted ways with Haskins, who struggled to adapt to Rivera’s coaching philosophy and committed multiple COVID-19 protocol breaches.

Haskins acknowledged his failure to meet “the standards” of an NFL quarterback in a Twitter post following the announcement.

“My time with the WFT has unfortunately come to an end. I thank the team & fans for the opportunity to play for the team I grew up rooting for,” Haskins tweeted before making his account private. “I take full responsibility for not meeting the standards of a NFL QB & will become a better man & player because of the experience.”

Haskins went 3-10 as a starter for the Washington Football Team, throwing 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while completing 60.1% of his passes.

The Washington Football Team has a 6-9 record this season, and with one game to go, the team is one victory away from winning its division and clinching a playoff spot.
