Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Sen. Tim Kaine, took to the Sunday morning news shows to raise doubt about the legitimacy of the FBI’s renewed investigation into the Democratic nominee this close to an election.
“I just have no way of understanding these actions,” Kaine told “This Week” host George Stephanopoulos. The actions are “completely unprecedented,” he said, reiterating the talking points the campaign has been using since Friday when the FBI renewed its probe.
Kaine said it is “puzzling” why FBI Director James Comey would break protocol by discussing material that is “so incomplete when you haven’t even seen the material yourself 11 days before an election.”
“Why would you talk about an ongoing investigation?” he asked. “I just have no way of understanding these actions,” Kaine said.
Clinton made similar arguments, along with her campaign, throughout the day on Saturday, raising questions about the motivations of a Republican FBI director so close to an election, and especially when most polls showed Republican nominee Donald Trump losing.
The FBI reopened the case Friday into Clinton’s use of a private server that she used to receive classified emails while she was secretary of state.
It has been reported that the more than 1,000 emails it had found while conducting a separate investigation caused the bureau to reopen the case after it had decided to end its probe into her use of the server, finding nothing that would constitute criminal malfeasance to recommend that the Justice Department pursue charges.
But the FBI has not released any information on what was contained in the newly discovered emails.
Kaine said the American people deserve an explanation from Comey on why he took the action.
