D.C. charter school’s garden gets nearly $8k donation

Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School in Northeast Washington is enjoying $7,862 from Whole Food’s Community Giving Day on Sept. 7, when 5 percent of the P Street grocery store’s profits went to the school’s garden. Stokes uses the garden to produce fruit and veggies that are served to its 320 elementary students. “The funds raised will enable us to invest in our programs that teach students about the value of nutrition and healthy choices, and how to prepare food,” said Linda Moore, founder and executive director of the Stokes school.
