Biden family dog Champ dies at 13

The Biden family’s oldest dog Champ died on Saturday at the age of 13, the president and the first lady said in a joint statement.

The German shepherd died “peacefully at home,” President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden said, recalling Champ’s younger days when he would chase their grandchildren in their backyard in Delaware.

“He was our constant, cherished companion during the last 13 years and was adored by the entire Biden family. Even as Champ’s strength waned in his last months, when we came into a room, he would immediately pull himself up, his tail always wagging, and nuzzle us for an ear scratch or a belly rub,” they wrote.

The family has had Champ since 2008. When moving into the White House earlier this year, Champ was joined by the Bidens’ other German shepherd named Major, who was adopted by the Bidens in 2018.

In March, both dogs were sent back to the Biden family home in Delaware after 3-year-old Major showed signs of aggression following an attack on a member of the White House security team. They returned to the White House not long after.

“In our most joyful moments and in our most grief-stricken days, he was there with us, sensitive to our every unspoken feeling and emotion. We love our sweet, good boy and will miss him always,” the statement added.
