Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Wednesday that the state Department of Transportation will raise the speed limit on 680 miles of interstate highways to 70 mph by the end of the year. McDonnell described the move as “one step forward” in improving the state’s transportation system. The General Assembly approved the increase in March. VDOT studied nearly 800 miles of highways for potential increases, with review and input provided by engineers and the Virginia State Police. A listing of the segments that are slated for the change can be found here.
