Two charities that get the job done

Socially ? and civically ? Speaking is kicking off 2008 with a peek into charities that walk the walk and talk the talk for others ? every day.

» The Albright Foundation was founded in 1991 by a Howard County husband-and-wife team, William and Stephanie Albright, and their foundation has acted as a conduit for many children?s organizations over the years.

Why not one specific charity? “It wouldn’t be fair to single out just one,” Stephanie Albright said. “I would like corporations and individuals to realize the enormous impact they can have on smaller charities, especially in challenging economic conditions.”

What about all the new taxes for the new year? How will they affect fundraising?

“If the dollars dispersed can?t be as high [as in previous years], then maybe they can help solicit new people to volunteer,” Albright said. “We all can make a difference, especially in the lives of children.”

» Suzanne Nolan, event director for the Maryland Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, is forever the optimist. Finding a cure for CF tops her wish list for 2008.

“We have more than 30,000 children and young adults in this country with CF, and these brave young people?s lives have affected everyone around them. I want to be able to say that our fundraising, special events and the generous donations of our supporters have brought a cure. I want these children and young adults to have great and productive lives, where they are limited only by their imaginations, not physical disabilities. I also want to have back all of the young people who have died from CF. Many of them live in my memory, and that is what keeps me going.”
