Libertarian running mate Bill Weld said the “hatred” that Donald Trump is generating is reminiscent of George Orwell’s dystopian novel 1984.
Weld appeared on MSNBC’s Tuesday to warn against slavish and unquestioning devotion to political leaders, and read a few sentences from the novel, where brainwashed party members conduct a “two minutes hate,” a frenzied expression of irrational rage against alleged enemies of the state.
“Sound like a Trump rally?” said Weld after finishing his selection from the text. “Welcome to Donald Trump’s America, everybody.”
When asked whether he believes Trump has poisoned the political system with his heated rhetoric, Weld responded “I sure do. I think his whole campaign has been full of dog whistles and stirring up resentment and not too strong a word, hatred.”
Weld argued that Trump’s effect on American politics hasn’t been seen since charismatic leaders like radio personality Father Couglin and Louisiana Gov. Huey Long in the 1930s gained nearly cult-like followings.
