Pittsburgh, Pa., is experiencing the lowest unemployment it has seen since the early 1970s.
The joblessness rate in the city dipped to 3.6% in February, two-tenths of a percent lower than January, according to the monthly workforce report released by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
According to an analysis by Partner4Work, online job advertisements that target the Pittsburgh area increased by 53% from January 2018 to January 2019, exhibiting a much higher demand for workers with some employers struggling to fill open positions.
The amount of available workers has shrunk as unemployment in Pittsburgh fell more than a percentage point in the last year, and the city created 6,400 new jobs in the last year, mostly in construction.
The construction industry’s workforce grew by 2,900 jobs, which is almost 6% of its total workforce from February 2018.
The national unemployment rate was 3.8% in February, down from 4% in January.
