Rescue crews pulled a woman from the Anacostia River after she drove a sport utility vehicle into the murky waters Thursday.
The incident happened about 2 p.m., between the Navy Yard and the South Capitol Street Bridge, said D.C. Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer. D.C. police harbor patrol retrieved the woman from the water, and passed her on to paramedics on a fire boat, which took her to shore to an awaiting ambulance.
The woman, who appeared to be middle-aged, was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
The SUV floated to the middle of the channel as dive crews searched the waters to confirm there were no other passengers.
