Goya Foods CEO says war in Ukraine affecting food supply chain

The CEO of Goya Foods says that the war between Russia and Ukraine is affecting the food supply chain and leading to shortages.

Bob Unanue said during an interview on Fox and Friends on Sunday morning that the war is having a “devastating impact” on food shortages, ultimately leading to higher costs. Unanue told host Rachel Campos-Duffy that fossil fuels and exports of corn, wheat, and fertilizer are among the top things affected.

“There are two wars raging, the first is a war on fossil fuels,” Unanue said. “That has sent inflation skyrocketing. We are pacing seven, eight, nine, now 13% per month in our food. The cost of transportation has affected every facet of the economy.”

FOOD PRICES RISE TO HIGHEST LEVEL IN A DECADE AMID SUPPLY CRISIS

Unanue said that the other war waging right now concerns exports from Russia and Ukraine that the United States relied upon importing, according to the outlet.

“They make fertilizer, they make corn, wheat,” Unanue said, adding that Russia and Ukraine account for 26% of wheat production in the world.

Unanue said that “they also have sand for glass and also for fracking,” adding that “that’s all being blocked in the ports of Odessa,” which affects the supply chain and prices.

Russian military forces were claimed to have been repeatedly attacking grain storage facilities in Ukraine on Thursday, leading to added concerns about global food supply shortages and price increases. Additionally, Russia also bombed at least three ships carrying cargo from the Black Sea to the rest of the world.

President Joe Biden admitted on March 24 that sanctions placed on Russian exports had led to price increases in fertilizer, causing serious concerns about the supply chain for corn, wheat soy, and other such products.

“It’s going to be real. The price of the sanctions is not just imposed upon Russia,” Biden said. “It’s imposed upon an awful lot of countries as well, including European countries and our country as well.”
