Montgomery high schools first in Maryland to offer new career-related program

Two Montgomery County high schools are the first schools in Maryland to offer a new career-related education program, and among the first schools in the nation authorized to use the program.

The International Baccalaureate Career-related Certificate program is designed to better prepare students for college or the workplace. Rockville High School and Watkins Mill High School will be among only 21 schools in the nation offering the program.

“Our goal is to prepare our students for their future by offering a wide array of opportunities,” said Superintendent Joshua Starr. “The IBCC combines the rigorous International Baccalaureate courses with opportunities for our students to gain the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the 21st century.”

Students at Watkins Mill can begin coursework with the program this fall — the first students are expected to graduate at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

Rockville is preparing to offer the program next school year.
