Home Builders Association offers new green certification

The Home Builders Association of Maryland is among the first industry associations in the country to offer certification in green building.

The program kicks off May 23 and will teach members about the specific criteria they will have to adhere to in terms of building methods and materials to be certified as a green builder.

Green building calls for environmentally responsible building processes and materials, as well as energy efficiency.

According to John Kortecamp, the association?s executive vice president and chief executive, green building has seen a surge in popularity among consumers.

“With the significant rise in the cost of energy, having a home that is energy-efficient is going to be of growing importance to consumers,” Kortecamp said.

He added that the new program has already spurred interest among the association?s 1,250 corporate members, which have more than 100,000 employees. Aside from the new program, the association also represents the interest of the building industry in state and local government issues, and provides education and certification programs and business development networking opportunities.
