Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer signaled he won’t support President Trump’s plan to use private funding to fulfill much of his massive infrastructure plan, and predicted Trump’s idea would create toll roads all around the country.
“It means Trump tolls from one end of America to the other, and huge profits for financiers who, when they put up the money, want to be repaid by the average driver, worker and citizen,” Schumer, D-N.Y., said Monday.
Senate Democrats this year proposed a $1 trillion infrastructure plan that does not include any private funding. They invited Trump to partner with them on the plan, which they said would create millions of jobs and ensure all the needed projects are addressed. Democrats have not, however, come up with a way to pay for their proposal.
Trump’s $1 trillion infrastructure proposal would use only $200 billion in federal funds. The rest would come from the private sector.
Schumer said the idea would result in “much less construction” and “far fewer jobs.”
Under Trump’s plan, Schumer said, “places where they can’t build a toll, like repairing our crumbling schools, will likely get left behind.”
