Herschel Walker edges out Georgia’s Raphael Warnock in 2022 Senate poll

A new poll shows football legend Herschel Walker might be the GOP’s best choice to unseat Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock in the 2022 election.

“Breaking: @trafalgar_group & @InsiderAdv 2022 #GASen #poll (3/7- 3/9) shows Herschel Walker as #GOP’s #1 contender,” said Trafalgar Group head pollster Robert Cahaly on Twitter. “47.7% @HerschelWalker 45.5%, @ReverendWarnock 2.5%, Other 4.3% Und.”

The poll comes after former President Donald Trump hyped Walker as a potential candidate to knock off Warnock, saying the Georgia Heisman Trophy winner would be just as unstoppable in politics as he was on the field.

“Wouldn’t it be fantastic if the legendary Herschel Walker ran for the United States Senate in Georgia?” Trump said in a press release. “He would be unstoppable, just like he was when he played for the Georgia Bulldogs, and in the NFL. He is also a GREAT person. Run Herschel, run!”

TRUMP URGES HERSCHEL WALKER TO RUN FOR SENATE IN GEORGIA: ‘RUN HERSCHEL, RUN!’

Walker, a Georgia native who played football for the University of Georgia before a lengthy professional career, has been a vocal Trump supporter in recent years.

“It hurt my soul to hear the terrible names that people called Donald,” Walker said in a speech at the Republican National Convention last year. “The worst one is racist. I take it as a personal insult that people would think I’ve had a 37-year friendship with a racist. People that think that don’t know what they’re talking about. Growing up in the Deep South, I’ve seen racism up close. I know what it is. And it isn’t Donald Trump.”

The Trafalgar poll also shows Walker beating out more established Republican opponents in a hypothetical Senate primary, leading both former Sen. Kelly Loeffler and former Rep. Doug Collins by double-digit margins.

Warnock, a Democrat who defeated Loeffler in last year’s Georgia special election, will already be forced to defend his seat in 2022.

Former GOP Sen. David Perdue, who lost his reelection bid last year to Sen. Jon Ossoff, has already ruled out the idea of running against Warnock next year.
