House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) called the indictment of former President Donald Trump an “injustice” and an interference in an election.
The former president was indicted Thursday evening in a surprise announcement from the grand jury that has been investigating him for months. McCarthy, one of several congressional Republicans who has defended Trump in recent weeks as rumors about a pending indictment and arrest swirled, slammed the historic move on Twitter.

“Alvin Bragg has irreparably damaged our country in an attempt to interfere in our Presidential election,” McCarthy tweeted. “The American people will not tolerate this injustice, and the House of Representatives will hold Alvin Bragg and his unprecedented abuse of power to account.”

McCarthy is one of several powerful GOP members who have berated Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg over his investigation into hush money payments Trump made to porn star Stormy Daniels during his first campaign for the White House.

Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and James Comer (R-KY) sent a letter to Bragg earlier this month, pressuring the prosecutor to hand over communications he has had with the Department of Justice.
Jordan was quiet on Thursday night shortly following the announcement of Trump’s indictment. He tweeted a single word in response: “Outrageous.”
