Philadelphia shifts 36 more schools online this week

Due to what the School District of Philadelphia is calling “staffing challenges,” 36 more schools will switch to virtual learning this next week.

The district’s announcement Sunday comes after it already shifted 46 other district-operated schools and nine Opportunity Network schools to online learning Friday.

“The Omicron surge continues to impact staffing in our schools and central offices,” the School District of Philadelphia stated. “We will continue to keep as many of our school buildings open as consistently as possible as long as we are confident we can maintain safe and orderly school operations.”

A total of 91 Philadelphia schools will hold classes 100% online from Jan. 10 through 14.

FIGHT OVER OPENING SCHOOLS PITS TEACHERS UNIONS AGAINST DEMOCRATS

Teachers and staff are still expected to report to the schools unless they are sick, quarantining, or have an approved leave. The district said additional schools could be added to the list of 91. Updates will be shared via its website each evening.

Last week, more than 150 Boston public school teachers called out sick over the weekend forcing the district to delay students’ return from winter break.

In Chicago and New York City, teachers unions are in a standoff with city officials over whether learning can shift to a virtual format. In both cities, the unions are demanding that in-person learning stop.
